I have a US Robotics Voice Int 56k modem running on WindowsME. It's in a pci slot. I also have an All In Wonder Radeon AGP card.

For some reason, I can't break dial tone unless I pick up the handset of a wired phone on the same line. I've checked the line and switched the connectors on the modem, but still nothing. I can hear the modem trying to grab the DT, but it never gets it. Another computer, using this same line has no trouble finding the DT. I've tried everything. I used to work for the telco, so phone lines are no mystery to me. I have even used another modem ib my system, but get the same problem. There are no IRQ or com port conflicts. (I'm on comm4 IRQ 9)

I've been trying to figure this out for months!!! Any ideas?

Thanks,
Rand

Make sure your country is selected in the Dialing Properties.

That's not the problem. I've checked that before. Are there any special codes I can add to the init string to force it to break DT?

Ok, I misunderstood, so you're hearing the dial tone but the modem isn't breaking to dial tone when it dial.

Try slowing down the DTMF tone speed (dialing speed) use S11=95 or S11=100 in the Extra Settings.

Thanks, I tried both of them just now, but nothing. BTW, I can hear the dial tone through the connected phone, but not from the modem unless I pick up the receiver of the phone. (I took off the cord to the handset, so all sound is coming from the modem.) If I don't pick up the handset I hear a clicking sound from the modem as it looks for the dial tone.

Test the modem in Hyperterminal:

1. Start Hyperterminal (hypertrm.exe)

2. Type in for Name: Terminal ,then click OK

3. Next in the "Connect using:" box, select 'Direct to Com X' (X being the Com Port your modem is on), and click OK

4. In Port Settings set 'Bits per second' to 115200 and click OK

5. Type ATE1 <hit enter> (E one, entered blindly, allows you to see what you type afterwards)
(modem will respond "OK")

6. Type AT &F M1 L3 <hit enter>
(modem will respond "OK")

7. Type AT H1 <hit enter> (that's H one)
(The modem should go off hook and you should hear the dial tone)

8. Type ATH <hit enter>
(The modem should go on hook, hang up the line)

If you don't hear the dial tone in line 7 then check the phone cord, make sure it's plugged into the LINE jack on the modem or try a different phone cord. If the cord is connected properly then there's be a problem with the modem, end of test.

If you heard the dial tone then continue.

9. Type ATDT your phone number <hit enter> (the ph # that the modem is on, ex. ATDT 5551234)
(The modem should dial out and you should get a busy signal since the modem is in using the line)

10. Hit enter to disconnect.

If you made it all the way through to line 10 and the modem dialed out ok then you may have a Windows problem. If the modem still reports NO DIALTONE in line 9 then either the dial tone is not standard or the modem is defective.
