After lightning took out my USR external modem, and the mainboard, I put in a board I bought from Dell, and plugged in another identical modem I had laying around (after I got DSL at work). Four of the led's stay lit (RD,SD,TR,CS) and I get various error messages, which seem to boil down to something else is using the modem. I did all of the things I could think of -- check and double check the phone line to the modem, install and re-install, clear all programs in the background, got a new modem from Dell (warranty--they thought it was bad, but I don't think its the modem anymore. The computer works fine, except for no connection. So, when I try to connect I don't hear the dialing or the handshake, then it gives the rapid beeping like when you leave the phone off the hook. I have the USR Modem Manager up and when I hit diagnose and test it says the line out is good. It feels like I'm going in circles at this point. Any ideas, or questions if I left anything out? PS I can only answer 9-5 CST at work since I don't have a connection at home. Thanks

Post a modem log of a connection attempt.

See http://modemsite.com/56k/modemlog.htm for locating the log.

Thanks, I'll work on it. Trouble is,the computer with the problem isn't online so I'll have to put it on a floppy and figure out how to post it with the machine at work. PS How do I post it? Thanks

Hi -- After a lightning strike which fried my USR external and the mainboard I can't connect. The board is replaced with a new one from Dell, and they sent me a new PCI hardware modem to replace the original winmodem, which didn't work when I put it in the new board. When I try to connect I can hear the modem grab, then just barely hear the modem dialing, after which there is a long pause, then the phone company rapid beeping like it was left off the hook. I put the new Dell modem in a friend's computer and it dialed out fine, and I tried a friend's laptop on my phone line and it connected to his ISP just fine. I've uninstalled and reinstalled many times, tried different drivers from Dell, and even reinstalled the OS (98SE) (Dell wants me to do that again--no thanks!)Any ideas from the experts out there in modem land? Thanks, and here is the modem log.

Check the number being dialed, it appears you're dialing 10 digits, it this correct?

Hi -- Yes, I have a ten digit number because the ISP is in an adjacent area code, not long distance though. Yesterday I got a new modem from Dell. Now when I try to connect I get the error code 680, "There is no dialtone". When I plug the line into a phone it works fine. I even ran the line into the main jack, with all of the other phones in the house disconnected, and still got the same message. Before this modem (identical to the previous one, a 3com PCI hardware modem, model 0727) I could hear some faint dialing after it grabbed, but now I can't hear anything after it grabs. Dell wants me to reinstall the OS yet again, but I think I would rather just get another computer (not a Dell). I think that they just go through some default decision tree that goes in circles. Five weeks without a connection at home, and at least thirty hours of hassling. I get the feeling that when (if?) I find out the problem it will be some simple detail, a Homer Simpson "D'OH" type thing. Thanks for your thoughts. David M

Test the modem using Hyperterminal.

See http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.htm for setting up Hyperterminal. Then in Hyperterminal:

1. Type AT E1 <hit enter> (E one, entered blindly, allows you to see what you type afterwards)
(modem will respond "OK")

2. Type AT &F1 M1 L3 <hit enter> (for an external be sure the manual volume control is turned up)
(modem will respond "OK")

3. Type AT H1 <hit enter> (That's H one)

The modem should go offhook and you'll hear the dial tone.

4. Type ATH (the modem will hang up the line)

If you didn't hear the dial tone in line 3 then check the phone cord, make sure it's plugged into the LINE jack on the modem or try a different phone cord. If the cord is properly attached and is good then it's possible the modem may be damaged. End of test.

If you hear the dial tone then continue

5. Type ATDT XXX-XXXX (XXX-XXXX is the number of the line the modem is on)

The modem should dial out and you'll hear a busy signal since the modem is using the line. Hit any key to disconnect.

If the modem dialed out ok then the problem is in Windows.

If the modem reported NO DIALTONE then either the modem is damaged or set to the wrong country code.
