It started with an ad on eBay - "2 Lucent ISA 28.8 modems". Cost - under $10 for the pair.

One was actually an Archtek SmartLink 5634BTS with what looked like dead firmware. The ATGM command gave the message "Modem Code Corrupt".

This website said that the modem is a USR clone:

I thought, why not try that Russian modem flasher? http://flasher.webzone.ru/

I had finally figured out how to get the SMF software there to flash modems - you need to edit the .ICL file that comes with it, or to click on the Easter egg mentioned in the FAQ.

By luck, I picked the 00568500 firmware, which was exactly right. The internal ID of the modem said 00178500, which is the X2 forerunner of the 568500. (After flashing, the internal ID is still 00178500, but it shows the newer firmware date, and can do V.90.)

The damn thing worked like a charm after that. Quite a little education, which is why I'm posting this.

BTW, the Global Village ISA 56K modem is also a USR clone. Others are mentioned on the Russian website, but not the SmartLink.
