I'm thinking of buying yet another used modem - this one is a 56K model #00178400 Sportster external. The seller says that there's static unless the phone plug is positioned in the jack just right.
Is this likely to be something I can fix by pulling a bit on the springy wires in the modem's phone jack, or is it a bigger problem?

Hard to say.
Maybe it's his line cord? Could be the contacts on the RJ11 jack in the modem, but could also be where the jack is soldered to the modem circuit board or even the board....

Sounds like an easy fix'rupper as long as you don't have to replace the line jack. Bit of scrapping to clean the pins, a little pin re-alignment and quick check of the solder joint's should do it.

I think I'll take a stab at it, especially since the thing does function as it is.
It hasn't been that long since I've wielded a soldering iron. And it comes with the AC adapter and serial cable, and it's an older model than the ones that have static noise problems out of the box. I can probably nab it for $10 or so.
