Ugh - I just bought a USR 5699A to replace a slow modem that I've had for 3 years. Installed in in Win 98SE - modem detected, drivers installed - no problem. When I try to connect to isp , I hear a dial tone, then a click that makes dial tone go away, then modem dials but obviously no connection is made because dial tone is already gone. Is this a Modem flaw, or is my system sending some kind of noise into the pci slots. Have tried other slots - same problem. Do I just give up? Same problem when I try to dial with hyper terminal.

Could possibly be a defective modem, just be sure that you've got the phone cord plugged into the LINE jack on the modem.

The 5699A uses [unreliable] solid-state on/off hook circuit;
May be affected by other devices plugged into phone line - you might want to try plugging modem directly into demarc or unplugging other devices to see if that may be your problem-
