sue kleinman Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 1/15/2002 1:43:17 PM my modem relays were damaged by a lightening stike and i have to replace it i wondered if i use an external modem can it be plugged into my com1 port my usb slots are being used by printer and a new dsl modem. which is my next question can i disable my internal modem and just use the dsl modem. the usr modem seems to struggle all the time and my connections are really slow. if i replace the modem will the performance of the computer improve? thanks for any info

v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 1/15/2002 1:55:11 PM Most external modems connect to COM port of computer, not USB - although there are USB externals. I would suggest staying away from USB externals as many of them are software modems. But, I don't understand your situation with respect to DSL. If you have a DSL modem, and you have DSL service(?), why do you need an analog modem? In other words, you could just use the DSL modem as long as you just use DSL/internet service.

v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 1/15/2002 9:37:11 PM If it's a USR internal modem, I'd take remove it from the machine (with the PC powered off and uplugged from the AC socket). Before removing physically, I think I'd go to Control Panel->Modems and remove the modem there. Then power off and physically remove. Aloha, |
