After discovering that the Control Center doesn't seem to recognize older modems, even v.90's, I uninstalled it.
In the middle, the dialog box for deleting shared .DLL's came up. After clicking "yes" a couple of times, I noticed that the file names were from another application, and had nothing to do with the COntrol Center.
So if you uninstall, don't let it delete any shared .DLL's, because it doesn't know it's own files from a hole in the ground.

I had the same problem, as I found in my XP PRO's eventlog. It deletes SEVERAL dll's, which the system file protection had to replace. Thank god I had xp!

I think ME and possibly 98 do a fair amount of unseen system file backups. In any case, the files can be extracted from the installer.
