I've just made the leap of building a new PC, using some old parts from the old one. However, whenever I try to use my old modem (which worked fine before), it dials up OK but when it gets to the point where I should be able to start surfing, the whole OS hangs (W98). I'm using the same OS as before but with a different base unit (Abit KG7-Raid MB, 512 Mb DDR, 60 Gb IBM HD).

I've tried re-installing the modem as well as re-installing the PC's OS and not installing any other hardware or drivers before trying the modem - same problem every time which requires resetting the base unit.

I don't know the modem's exact model number but it is a 2 yr old US robotics 3Com 56k PCI modem. Any advice would be gratefully received as I don't know what to do. The fact that it used to work makes me think that perhaps it isn't a modem problem but perhaps a motherboard problem or something? Or perhaps the motherboard expects different drivers!? I will try the latest drivers later but I don't hold out much hope.

Look on the modem board and post all numbers found.Go to the device manager, double click the computer and check if the modem is sharring a IRQ with another hardware. You could try the modem in another slot also.

The modem says it is a 56K Voice Internal PCI and displays "1999MDSM154". I've already tried it in another slot and it doesn't appear to be sharing an IRQ.

I've just had a look at US robotic's website and the way they identifiy the modem is as a xx2884-xx modem. Says that it will only work under '98 and in some conditions 98 SE or ME. I am using '98 though, with no updates that I know of, so I'm confused.

How are you installing this modem.post a modem log.TRy this string in extra settings. If this is a new system you might want to check the device manager in safe mode for more than one entry of modem,if there are more than one entry remove all and reboot.Windows will reinstall the modem. You might also disable unused com ports in the bios.
