I have got a Us robotics Performance Modem
I try to connect but it tells me that there's no dial tone .. acutally it gives me error 680 ... the modem seems to be ok, and the telephone that is connected to the modem works well ... Before I installed Win XP I had Win Me and I also had this problem.
I tried connecting the modem on other computers but it is still giving that message ...
When I use hyperterminal and I give it the dial command it also tells me "no dial tone" .. so finally I don't know what to do ... plz help me ... I haven't upgraded to V.92 because here in Colombia ISP's doesn't support that technology yet .. thanks for your help..

Make sure the phone wire is firmly plugged into the wall and the modem.Try removing any splitters or surge protectors from the phone line. The modem isn't properly plugged into a phone line as it may be plugged into the "phone" jack of the modem insted of the "line" jack. Now there the possiblity that the jacks themselves are mislabled so try switching the jack the line is plugged into on the modem. You can also add a few commas in front of the access number in combination with unchecking the "wait for dialtone before dialing" option in both the modems control panel and the DUN connection. If everything works, but the modem can't hear the dial tone, add X3 to the init string, which tells the modem to not detect a dial tone, or more correctly, to ignore the error code returned when it tries to detect one but can't.
If none of the above works, you've probably got a bad modem that will need replaced.Make sure you have the right country selected in dialing properties.
