jbzhou Tl Posts: 1 USA | Posted - 4/3/2002 10:55:18 PM I bought a USR 3C5699A PCI modem two months ago and got a consistent 48K connection since then on my AOL and Netzero accounts. On Sunday, I had 5 or 6 disconnections. Then, I only got the "there is no dial tone" message on both accounts when I try to reconnect. I reinstalled the driver software and still got the same message. I was wondering if anybody had experieced the same problem. What was wrong with this modem? Maybe the modem was broken. But after only two months of use? Thanks in advance. I use Win98SE and Athlon XP 1600+ by the way. |
Bob Starnes Tl Posts: 4360 USA | Posted - 4/4/2002 1:48:54 PM Test the modem with Hyperterminal: See http://modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp for setting up Hyperterminal. The in Hyperterminal try the following: 1. Type AT E1 <hit enter> (E one, entered blindly, allows you to see what you type afterwards) 2. Type AT &F M1 L3 <hit enter> 3. Type AT H1 <hit enter> (That's H one) The modem should go offhook and you'll hear the dial tone. 4. Type ATH (the modem will hang up the line) If you didn't hear the dial tone in line 3 then check the phone cord, make sure it's plugged into the LINE jack on the modem or try a different phone cord. Or it possible the modem may be damaged. End of test. If you heard the dialtone then continue. 5. Type ATDT XXX-XXXX (XXX-XXXX is the number of the line the modem is on) The modem should dial out and you'll hear a busy signal since the modem is using the line. Hit any key to disconnect. If the modem dialed out ok then the problem is in Windows. If the modem reported NO DIALTONE then either the modem is damaged or set to the wrong country code.

Troubled_user Tl Posts: 263 USA | Posted - 4/4/2002 2:46:02 PM This is clearly a problem with the modem. Listen while it's dialing, most importantly listen to the dial tone and the dialing process. Do you hear any static, crackling, or anything strange? Read this: |
Fire_Scorpian Tl Posts: 39 USA | Posted - 5/3/2002 6:14:47 AM I HAVE NO DIAL TONE EITHER. I BOUTH A NEW ZOOM 3025N MODEM AND ITS NOT NEAR AS GOOD AT THAT USR 3CP569A. I WILL DIAL THE NUMBER AND CONNECT. If i disconnect and redial i will get no dialtone. THE MODEM NEVER HANGS UP THE LINE. disconnect the phone cord and replug it back in, wala!! dial tone again. I am very disgusted with all the modems and modem companies. they all smoke to much pot and are always to drunk to make any progress.
if anyone has any help, for this, please reply. |
Troubled_user Tl Posts: 263 USA | Posted - 5/3/2002 12:12:57 PM I'm working on disassembly of USR and LT Win firmware, seeing if I can create a "hybrid" driver, one way or another... The SMF USR flashfiles help a bunch, but lucent's side is torture... |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 5/3/2002 10:41:35 PM jbzhou- No dial tone can occur for a # of reasons - it is possible the modem is damaged (on/off-hook solid state in USR modems has what I would call high failure rate); could also be caused by interrupt conflict or bad driver install; try changing PCI slots. www.modemsite.com/56k/pci.asp Fire_Scorpion - Aloha! Troubled_user Tl Posts: 263 USA | Posted - 5/4/2002 12:59:34 PM hmm, Windows NT drivers can be disassembled, but there's so many obscure references that there's no way to interpret it. I think I'll give up... |
