I just got a 5686D in hopes it would handle my poor phone lines better than the included PCI modem in my new computer.
I can't even get it to connect. (error 678)
Should I be using the standard XP driver? When I try to update driver from the USR disc, windows tells me "unable to update driver".
When I run diagnostics, I get a couple lines that say "Command Not Supported". Log of diagnostics pasted below

The 5686D is a hardware modem, so updating the drivers have no effect on performance.

USR modems do not support many of the plus sign commands, so it's normal to get a few command not supported messages.

You have firmware flash 5.2.9 This is the one included with the modem.
DO NOT FLASH UPGRADE THE MODEM

There are so many horror stories that a modem that connected at 48 after flashing connects at 19.2!!!

Suggestions:
With the USR 5686D, get & post here the results from
aty11
Use Hyperterminal directly connected to the modem COM port:
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp
Also see
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-adconversion.asp

If your line won't support 56k, or if it's marginal for 56k, you'll probably do best with 56k disabled - no matter what modem you use.

If 56k isn't disabled and your line won't support a 56k connect, the modem does a "double handshake" which takes longer; if the timeout to get carrier/connect is too short, no connect at all (Error 678) is the result; you could lengthen the timeout, but disabling 56k is preferable since the dial/handshake time is shortened, and often you'll get a better V.34 rate when V.90 is not even tried.

The USR "line probing" technology would only handle lines better in V.90/V.92 modes. The two metallic spring sounds in the handshake indicate that it is being used. All modems, more or less, handle V34 the same. Post what v.Richard told you to post and we'll see from there

First of all, if the value of 3750 is close to 50, you may have poor local phone lines and may want to check into noise. Now, take the level of 3300 and subtract it from the level of 3750. If the value is 25 or higher, you most likely have too many A/D, D/A conversions which indicates that you can not achieve 56k speeds. If the value is betwen 20 and 25, you MAY have too many A/D, D/A conversions and you may not be able to achieve 56k speeds.

Try your pc at a friends house if you can that gets a good 56k connnect.Pick up the phone and dial one number,do you hear any cross talk or other sounds,clicks...ect? Try connecting to the telco box outside. Are you using a extra long phone cord from the modem to the wall jack.Unhook everything from the phone wall jacks in the house and try again.Have you had a second line installed?

Is this a name brand pc and how much ram do you have installed.

Try the ati11 in Hyperterminal right after you disconnect.

About the No Carrier message:

USR modems, after falling back to V34 in the handshake, will do 6 to 7 ADDITIONAL retrains, UNTIL IT CAN MAKE A 24000 or HIGHER connection.

Many homes and businesses are attached to the central office by a "SLICK" or "Subscriber Loop Carrier" system, such as SLC-96 or SLC Series 5. If such a system is present, the line from a subscriber's phone first goes to a SLC "remote terminal" (which is typically in an underground vault in the neighborhood, in the basement of the office building, etc.). At that point the analog signal is converted to 64Kbps digital; then 24 of these are put on two pairs (one for sending, one for receiving) and then this goes to the central office. At the central office there are several ways of attaching to the switch, but in so-called "universal SLC", the 24 signals go to a "CO-terminal", where they are demultiplexed and converted back to analog before attaching to the switch.

A SLICK creates a D to A conversion then an A to D conversion. The later A to D conversion will not allow you to get 56K (PCM) rates. None of the protocols (V.90, K56Flex or X2) will give you 56K rates with the extra A to D conversion

I'm pretty sure I have crappy phone lines or the SLICK situation charles talks about.
Here is the result of ati11 right after disconnecting:

The computer is a new Gateway P4 1.8 with 256 ram. It came with a gateway internal modem, which connected consistantly at even slower rates than the USR 5686 is giving me.

Will telephone companys (Verizon in my case) give out information on SLICK and how many A/D D/A conversions my phone lines go through?

Moving the computer somewhere else with a good phone line won't change my at home situation, & would be a bit inconveniant. I could take the modem only to work & try it out there.

I have already checked all internal house wiring & jacks, & have tryed plugging in directly to the outside tellco box. No change. I can't hear any noises or clicking while talking on the phone.

Frome what I have read here & other places, phone companys are not usually too responsive to complaints about modem connection rates, they only service issues/problems with voice communications over the phone lines, which I don't have.

I guess I'm kind of stuck with 26.4 ?????????

Telco is providing you with a "voice grade line". As they say, if you can get 56k speeds, good, but if not, a data line can be purchased. Makes sense to me.

You can ask telco repair to run a noise & transmission test from your dmarc; they're required to meet specs for a voice grade line, free of charge. When the friendly tech is there, ask him what kind of facilities you're on. Then, you'll know what's up.

Might try adding &U13&N16 to your modem string.

As I've said to a previous post, 31.2 and 33.6 are nearly impossible to obtain, I'd say that 26.4 to 28.8 are theoretical maximum values.

BTW, is there a way to limit UPstream on USR modems? Probably not, never found it.

This is where the line-backer plan (by ameritech, others offer similar plans) comes into play:

I had similar problems with my phone line (connect 16.8, retrains to 12.0), and this guy came down to check my lines. He attached a probe thing to my demarc, and said to me "this number should be in the 20's for good 56k", and the needle was in the 50's. He said that he was surprised that it didn't affect the voice!!

The problem turns out to be that our previous house owners installed 3 lines, and there was a point upstairs that all three lines created a short circuit!

After that, I had clear 48-50k connects (probably you won't be as lucky) and no problems whatsoever, so unlike stated on 808hi, these line-backer plans are not completely useless
