I have a USR modem in an emachine. It won't connect to my isp on my line and the modem volume seems very low, and can't be changed. This same pc/modem will connect if I move it to my friends house accross town. And his pc/modem will work at my house using the same outlet/phone jack as the pc that won't work. The phone company says the lines show no interference. The phone line voltage reads at 50v. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be the problem, or better what could be a solution.

Have you tried to force a V34 connection. Also what is the modem model number and OS that you are using? Try S32=98 in extra settings. Are you connecting to the same isp in both places.Post a modem log please.

Sorry for the irrelevant question, but since when did emachines put USR modems in their computers?

What happens when you attempt to make a connection?
Do you get a DUNS Error? If so, which one?

U know, there's a very simple solution to this not requiring much brainwork:

If your modem works at his house and his modem works at your house, then why don't you two switch modems?

Wow, very interesting article, but I still recommend the switching modems method. Less work to plug in one card comparing to bottles of vinegar and boxes of baking soda...

I hate that method because it reminds me of how I blew up my car battery... How was I supposed to know the jump cable was still attached?
