darkmatterj Tl Posts: 12 USA | Posted - 10/27/2002 7:00:17 PM Hi!... I'm planning to buy the USR 5686E External Modem... so is there anything that I must know before doing it? I dont know, maybe if you could tell me the pro's and the con's of the modem so I will be sure that I'll made a good buy... what will be essential to me will be the speed that it will connect (at least I hope that it connects at the same speed, or a bit higher than my old Lucent Win Modem (with driver version 6) that connected at 45 - 49kbps (because I had before some "sencitive" modems, that never got higher than v34 without any possible reason because I have a "certified 56k line" and I have no line noise) Anyways, anything will be really appreciated... Thanks in advance! -Raul |
Brewwriter Tl Posts: 9 USA | Posted - 10/28/2002 11:39:44 AM I suggest you read v.Richard's Article "Buying a New Modem" in the News section of Modemsite.com. Also read all the information about US Robotics modems on the site. It seems that USR is not what it used to be, in other words, its products no longer are head and shoulders above other makers. Their new warranty policy is a sore point for many dissatisfied customers. Good luck, |
comsense Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 2/18/2003 7:06:03 AM Question: did you buy the 5686E, and if so how did it work out? I also have a Lucent winmodem (laptop built-in) that connects reliably at 45K but others (including Zoom V92) are unable to do so. I found your post in a search because I am considering the USR 5686E. I would be interested in your comments if you have tried it. thanks Dick |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 2/18/2003 10:24:45 AM One problem I have with USR modems is that they are over priced.Another problem you can have with serial modem is buffer overrun. Most fix this with a high speed serial card. Also note that not all external modem are hardware modems. Usr has taken a back slide in hardware and support.Taken older modems and just updating the drivers then selling them as a new modem. |
darkmatterj Tl Posts: 12 USA | Posted - 5/31/2003 7:20:23 AM Hi! Its my again, sorry for not answering before, but my subscription to Modemsite expired and now I did renew it... Well... Actually, I bought the USR5686E... Man, it costed me a total of $120.00 (thats including the Shipping and Handling)... I'm very angry at that little thing... First of all... at least, they super fast, thats what I like of it... (almost always 48k ~ 53)... BUT it gives me a lot of problems... Sometimes, when I'm downloading files, or when I'm accessing multiple websites, it just paralises the flow of data and it just disconnects itself, and to reconnect is a problem, because I have to wait a couple of minutes, or turn it off and on... ah and the other problem I got is that I believe it is Call Waiting Tone Deaf or something, because it never detects when I receive a call, even with the updated Monitor from USR... I have changed the modem 3 times, and all of them have the same problems... does anybody knows what can I do??? Any help will be very appreciated... Thanks in advanced.

v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 6/1/2003 1:29:10 PM First thing I'd suggest is looking at the post-call diagnostics (& post them here) after you're disconnected - www.modemsite.com/56k/diag3com.asp post the results from also what does at i7 show for version #s? Are you calling a V.92 ISP?

v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 6/4/2003 6:27:04 PM The ati6 is where I'd like to see more data - especially after you are disconnected - the one you have posted shows that you disconnected. What it does show is a final rate of 40000/21600 with a peak rate of 44k. 40k isn't a very good 56k rate, and 21.6k isn't a very good upstream rate. Also needed is the (missing) ati11 and y11 results. Aloha! Richard. |
