Hi:

I use CompuServe 7.0 as an ISP. CS 7.0 was moved to a new computer via CD-ROM with a clean install and proper set-up but "it" won't connect beyond step #5 - "talking to network". When the access sequence hits step #5 the modem hangs up immediately then redials stopping again at step #5 but this time the window freezes up. Upon exit a "WCS2000 invalid page fault in module kernal32.dll" error message is displayed. No other error messages are displayed at anytime.

The new computer is a 2.4 GB P4 w/533 FSB, 60 GB HD, 512 KB RAM, USR 2977 V.92 PCI hardware modem and Win98. The "old" computer, Win98 650 Celeron with a generic soft56 modem, connects OK almost 100% of the time. The telephone line checks OK, MS Device Manager is OK with no conflicts, and the control panel modem entry is OK.

The modem dials and connects to CS to obtain access phone numbers which indicates to me that the modem is working properly.

The USR modem was replaced with a Zoom 3025 V.92 PCI with no change - still won't connect; and the “new” computer has only one PCI slot so the modem can’t be moved.

Slowing the modem properties connect speed, slowing down both fifo buffer controls, adding commas to the local CS access phone numbers, and reinstalling Win98 and CS 7.0 do nothing positive - still no connection!

Any suggestions?

Can a Win98 modem log be obtained for the CS access attempt? The only log I find is for the Win98DUN "1-800" CS access number "look up" connection (which checks out OK).

I've also sent a clone of this message to the CS help section.

Regards,
Gary

Is this modem sharing an IRQ with another device. Try connecting with HyperTerminal.

As Charles suggest, see if you can connect to # via Hyperterminal connected directly to modem com port per
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp

If you can, probably something wrong with networking setup either in CS, or conflict with network card in computer. (Does computer have NIC? Is it used?)

If you cannot, a change of PCI slot may help
www.modemsite.com/56k/pci.asp

Aloha! Richard.

Charles & Richard:

Thanks for getting back to me! I'll play with the "new computer" over the weekend and try the hyperterminal suggestion; no IRQ conflicts showed up on device manager but I'll check again. I may also sign-up for a month of ISP time and see if the "new" computer and USR modem will work with a regular dial-up system.

I moved the Zoom 3025 over to our "old" computer; installation was "smooth", and took only 10 minutes - the Zoom instructions were actually correct and written so one could understand them! - and CS was accessed OK+. As the Zoom modem didn't work using the new computer but works with the old computer I don't believe that I have a modem problem!

Going thru CS forum entries I'm finding lots of problems like mine which tells me CS 7.0 is still "buggy". If the new computer works with other ISPs we'll make a decision about what to do. CS is my wife's ISP; she used it while working in WA and ID, and it worked well for her even though she resented my calling CS "e-mail for idiots". When she joined me last year in early retirement I moved CS over to our home computer, but never used it myself. When my ISP "expired" overnight I started a CS e-mail account out of desperation and I really don't want to go thru the ordeal of starting over again. Unfortunately, to paraphrase my former students, CS 7.0 is real "cheesy".

Richard: great site! Only problem is you don't charge enough to keep the "riffraff" (like me) out.

Regards,
Gary

Might look here, not sure if this would be the setup you are using.

Charles:

Thanks for the info - I think you were onto the problem; but before I could check out the IRQ conflict issue blind luck provided a solution! I loaded CS 5.0 and everything is OK - it seems that CS 6.0/7.0 dosn't like my new computer; perhaps the on-board LAN card was part of the problem?

I appreciate your help ...

Regards,
Gary
