raynman Tl Posts: 6 USA | Posted - 9/29/2003 12:51:33 PM I am trying to set up a computer for dial up that has a USR 5660A modem. I'm having problems creating the dial up account. When I use Internet Connection Wizard, I can't get past "Step 3 of 3: Configuring your computer" No matter what I type here I get an error that says: "Connection to xxx-xxxx" is not a valid name. The entry name must contain at least on character that is not a space and cannot begin with a period. Choose a differnent name." Can anyone please help? Ray |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 9/29/2003 7:52:37 PM What operating system are you using? It sounds to me like the name you are giving the connection is the phone number you want to be dialed and Windows doesn't like it - Or, you could create the connectoid without using the wizard (at least in most versions of Windows) Aloha! Richard. |
raynman Tl Posts: 6 USA | Posted - 9/30/2003 12:29:53 AM Richard, I am using Win2K. It doesn't matter what I type in at that point. Words, Letters, Nummbers....nothing works and I still get the same error message. I tried to access the site you refered to but it wouldn't let me in. Kept saying a need a premium subscription but I have registered already and it won't let me in. Any other ideas? Mahalo? are you in HI? Ray |
raynman Tl Posts: 6 USA | Posted - 9/30/2003 12:52:23 AM Richard, I was able to access the Connectoid link you provided. It is exactly what I have been doing to set up my connectoid. Only problem is that I get the error message when I get to that darned "name your connection" window. Ray |

raynman Tl Posts: 6 USA | Posted - 9/30/2003 2:41:39 AM Charles, It appears you have found me the mother load!! The information you provided is exactly related to the issue I'm having. I'm in the process of re-installing Win2K. I found that in "Services", Remote Access Connection Manager was turned off and no matter what I did, I could not get it to start. Not even in "Safe" mode. It appears that when I did the upgrade, it did not copy the correct files to allow me to access the RasMan. Thanks for taking the time, I'll keep you posted. |
raynman Tl Posts: 6 USA | Posted - 9/30/2003 8:15:45 AM Charles, The links you provided proved to be just the ticket. I was on the Microsoft site most of the day yesterday and was not able to find the same article you did. I guess I need to practice my search skills! The Win2K upgrade in itself is not enough but after reinstalling IE 6.0 and WIN2K service pack 4, I was immediately able to create a dial up account. The article was exactly correct in it's instructions for my situation. Thanks again, |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 9/30/2003 8:26:27 AM Glad it worked out. After doing some research on the problem I did come up with another way to do this but it would of been just a quick fix. It would of been editing the reg. There are some reg entry that are not there until you make a new connection, might have removed these reg files, one was for ras but there could of been other problems as well. Take care. |
