Yes, after many years of faithful service my SM56 PCI Speakerphone has developed an odd fault.

When I restart the PC the error message - "cannot detect the modem... maybe switched off, incorrectly installed blah blah etc..."

The only thing that gets it working again is to:
uninstall the software, physically remove the modem, restart, restart again, physically set up the modem again, follow the instal wizard and then it works, only to fail with the same error message the next time the PC restarts.
I have one clue. The wizard fails to find sm5698.cat and I have to locate it by browsing to windows/motorola/Motset955 to find it.

It's driving me nuts!!! Please, any suggestions would be extremely gratefully received.

What OS are you running? I would boot to safe mode and check the device manager for more than one listing of the modem, remove all modems that are listed,go down to com ports and remove, reboot and windows should find new hardware, point it to the drivers. I would download the drivers from the site below in case your have become corrupt. Might also check the Installation Guide Have you installed any other hardware to this pc? Did you install any software that using the modem when you boot up.

I would go to start, run and type in msconfig,go to the startup tab, look for any program that might be using the modem on startup like real player.

Thanks for the reply charles. I'm operating Windows 98. I don't know why but my system does not boot to safe mode in the usual way, and I don't know how to do it. But checking the device manager through windows - Control Panel/System/Device Manager, shows only one modem.

I can't see anything on startup that may be using the modem and downloading the drivers haven't helped.

Could the modem be faulty in some way?
