After I installed my U.S. Robotics modem everything is recognized and installed, but the modem doesn't connect to the Internet. It always puts the modem in COM1. It doesn't work in COM2 either. No matter what I try I can't change the COM successfully. It should work in COM3, but somewhere else on the Computer it's still recogized as COM1 or COM2.

Yet when I install the modem in 2000/XP, it chooses the right COM and everything works without having to worry about a single thing. I'm using Windows Me. This problem keeps happening with 98/Me. Drivers are updated as well. Can this problem be solved and if not, is there any other brand modem that work instintly without this conflict? I don't want to have to change operating systems just because of this conflict.

What model USR?
If it's a Winmodem, the modem must be installed with the USR driver program and the COM port will be *created* by the driver/OS - the actual # of the COM port will not matter, but the modem won't install properly if you use the Add New Hardware Wizard.

Aloha! Richard.
