dralle Tl Posts: 2 USA | Posted - 12/28/2004 9:41:50 PM Tonight I purchased three US Robotics 56k USB Faxmodems with the plan of plugging all three of them into my Windows XP Pro system and using all three at the same time to form a PPP multilink connection to my ISP (they support PPP multilink as does Windows XP). The problem is that it looks like the USR USB modems all have the same USB serial number and the system won't allow me to plug in more than one at a time. I had this problem with some USB-to-RS232 adapters and I got a special piece of software from the vendor FTDI that programmed the EEPROM in the chip with a unique serial number and from then on I could have more than one of them plugged in at a time. Anyway, how can I do this with these modems? I can't believe that USR never tried plugging two of these into the same computer at the same time. BTW, I am replacing three standard RS232-based modems and know the three-modem, multilink ppp connection works. The multilink PPP is totally awesome, and with the modem compression, I've seen transfer rates as high as 480k bps over the three bundled modems!!! The response is similar to my T1 line. Very cool. Thanks for the help with the USB modems. This is a really bummer. Matt Dralle

v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 12/31/2004 11:21:24 AM Controllerless or softmodems require an OS-specific driver to "be a modem". Most of these drivers do not support more than 1 modem. So, even if you got the s/n changed, you may still have a problem. You need either to use a full h/w controller-based modem (rare in USB form), or mix chipsets/modem types. Aloha! Richard. |
