OK. lets see if I can explain this. I have a LT (Agere) V.92 Data and Fax Modem with driver version 8.23. About 5 months ago I installed Windows XP Pro. Suddenly (just last week) I can no longer get a dial tone. Everything worked fine up until now. Out of the blue it just stopped working. I've done just about everything I can think of to rectify the situation to include: deleting and reinstalling drivers, moving modem to different com port, using a different modem (US Robotics with generic driver), checking phone lines and connections. I can get a dial tone through the modem to a phone but hyperterminal can't get a dial tone. Device manager shows no conflicts. Windows tells me the device is working properly, but, I've never believed Windows. I think it defaults to "working properly". Heck, I've even reinstalled XP to "repair" itself. I've read on your site that any driver over 8.7 can cause problems for a V.92 so I haven't updated the driver past 8.23. Haven't tried to update the BIOS because it's an AMI BIOS on a Microstar motherboard built by Gateway. None of the three are much help, besides, messing with the BIOS scares the crap out of me. I found it odd that I couldn't get any modem to work. Any ideas? Thank you for any advice you could give.
