my win modem on an ibm thinkpad would freezeup shorty after goeing online. I checked all com ports and i/o's against a good running machine all the same except mineshowedi/o for an old d-link no longer in use. unable to figure it out i formatted and installed a win98se i had laying around (retail version}it really sucks.It will only put on com1 ibmbios suck can only able or enable current serial port no choices.my main computer shows all ports 1-16 and i can change things around on a plain old win98 . any help would be greatly appreciated as need this one to go online to help fix three others.(no floppy on main computer} Thanks in advance camperr21

Win98se does not include driver for the modem.
The modem does not install to a BIOS-enumerated COM port - the modem driver creates the virtual COM port for the modem, which will be listed after the driver is successfully installed.

You cannot install the modem/driver using Windows Add New Hardware.
You install by running the driver pkg's setup.exe:

on 8/24 you respnded to my question. i just wanted to say thank you. few sites actually reply so i never really looked. your answer beats all my site searching.simply put with a win modem nothing exsits untill you have the CORRECT driver installed. i will contact a friend to download the driver. again thank you and keep up the good work, we simpletons need you.
