| russb Tl Posts: 2 USA | Posted - 10/9/2005 7:27:38 AM    I'm working on a low-cost (It has USB ports only -- no PS/2 or RS-232 ports.) 2001 model year 700 MHz PII Gateway PC that's running Windows ME. It seems to have a Rockwell modem on its motherboard. It'll connect and log on to AOL and Earthlink (using Dial Up Networking), but within 30 seconds or so it always disconnects. Here's a clue, I think: Using Hyperterminal to connect to the Earthlink PAD, the modem remains connected. I've removed all other devices from the phone line, and (I think) re-installed the modem drivers from the Gateway CD-ROM. (Though next time I may try using Add/Remove software in Control Panel to remove the old ones.) Over the years, stretching back to the 1970s, I've worked with many modems (though by no means am I a modem expert) but I don't recall seeing this behavior before. Today I'll have another whack at it by paying more attention to the log file and using the excellent info here at modemsite. Has anyone else seen this consistent disconnect behavior. TIA.
