I can not get the internal modem of a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop working. OS=WinME with all the latest and greatest support packs from the MSFT update site are installed.

I think the modem is fine bit I can not detect a dial tone , nor negotiate connection when un-checking the wait for dial tone using some commas as a pre-delay.

I can plug the phone line into the phone and I have a strong dial tone. Then I can plug the same line into my XP laptop and “I think” I am negotiating a connection because I am asked for my security passwords from the company I work for. I would feel better if I can hear the dial tone though. Then, I plug the same line into the WinME laptop and I get no hints of a connection at all.

I am not sure I have the proper drivers for the modem. I have3 assumed this is a Agere modem because when I remove the modem from the device manager, and the com port, then reboot I get the LT WIN modem messages. This has pointed me to downloading the 8.30 drivers.

Suggestions?

Have you gone to Dell site to find drivers for your machine?
Generally, notebooks do not use 'standard' (PCI) modems - rather use AC'97 AMR (Audio Modem Riser) softmodems.

Either (a) you are using wrong driver, or (b) the modem is bad.

Hi Rich !

I am not exactly sure which of these "dell site" drivers is the one I should be using?

My guess would be the third one, for Data/Fax, right?, even though the 3com one says modem also?

Which would you select?

FWIW - Neither the modem NOR the ethernet ports seem to work.

I tried all the drivers listed on the Dell page and none work. There are not even any varying results between the drivers.

The suspected driver we targeted above gives the below log. At the same time I downloaded a freeware called “Modem Doctor”. The tool does not indicate any operational difficulties at all. All tests indicate good working order.

No way can it be my phone line as when I plug the line into the phone I have a dial tone. BTW, the phone line also carries DSL if that matters.

You think I should bail… declare it a dead modem for lack of dial tone???

Well - if your ethernet port also doesn't work, then perhaps you have the 4th mmodel you listed (combo modem/ethernet) -

Before giving up, you might try running
ltremove.exe
which is included in the LT driver paqckages before attempting re-installation.
