These 2 internal ISA hardware modems, most preferred for Linux appps, are limited to V.34 and X2 protocols as verified when performing a modem query via the Control Panel. As a result, they only attach between 24.4 - 31.2kbps when V.90 speeds of 44 - 51kbps are routinely achieved using an external (RS232) Sportster 56k that I upgraded to V.90 3 years ago.

Please help, I've exhausted the USRobotics site and found no upgrade path.

The Askey modem cross-references to J-Mark and Phoebe brands (presumed cross-badging of nearly identical units). Askey and Phoebe don't provide an apparent mechanism for reflashing.

J-Mark supplies accessible downloads for this model: 56K V/D/F Rev 10.3.35 (firmware HCP-02 USA 9706160), but the flash software fails to install the updated firmware.

Any help is welcome and thanks in advance,

MrCub

Dear moderator - Aloha, Richard!,

Thanks for the link to USR's archives, not at all obvious as to how to access it from their website. I found the appropriate model#-up.exe, downloaded it and attempted to flash using Win98SE's bundled driver for control interfacing. That bounced, so I had to experiment by loading one of the drivers provided by USRobotics compressed in mdmusr.exe.

One driver, Sportster 56000 Voice Internal, permitted model#-up.exe to flash the ROM and the device now reports V.90 with the new flash and DSP rev's as 4.9.1, up from 4.1.11.

Now for the other frustrating ISA hardware modem, V1456VQH-X. It has a TI chipset, one that your site identifies as typically USR or 3COM (TMS320X), but the FCC#: H8NTAI-31778-M5-E suggests otherwise- Askey, J-Mark or Phoebe as found at Rob Clark's modem/winmodem site, http://start.at/modem.

I'll continue digging, but attempts to use J-Mark's updating scheme failed. Perhaps I ought to experiment with different device drivers to see if it permits the flash program to rewrite? Unfortunately, Askey, J-Mark, and Phoebe all refer to 96-C807241.zip for its primary drivers.

This will require more work.

Post Script - J-Mark's hcp04usa.zip, containing fwload.exe and hcp04usa.hex, finally worked on the V1456VQH-X after the soundcard, NIC and LPT2 ISA cards were removed. The modem now reports V.90 compatibility.
