I am using a USR winmodem (don't know the exact model number)on a dual 1GHz Intel P3 machine. Everynow and then, very randomly, the machine would lock up and give me the blue screen. I did some searching and someone in a forum mentioned that winmodems and dual cpu machines don't belong together. So, being unsure, I tried to manually set the affinity for usrmlnka.exe and usrshuta.exe to a single cpu and I haven't had a blue screen since. Occasionally, one of those drivers would die leaving my modem connection dead. And not knowing how to restart the modem drivers, I am ultimately forced to just reboot the machine.

Do I need to get another modem? Perhaps a full hardware modem?

Oh, BTW, this is an internal PCI winmodem. Unfortunately, my motherboard doesn't have any ISA slots otherwise I would be using my beloved USR Courier instead.

Thanks for reading.

Should be compatible - but like anything with PCs, should be and what is aren't always the same.
Even without dual cpu, there are problems for certain people with certain combinations.
The USR winmodem might work better if its in a different PCI slot; or, with a different driver; then again, it might not.
A different chipset winmodem might work without problem - then again.... you get the idea.... only way to know for sure is to try....

Aloha! Richard.
