New computer running Windows XP Pro SP1 and USR Winmodem (00569800 with 2001 MS driver) used ONLY for faxes (I have a cable modem for the internet). I've verified that the phone jack has a dial tone, but I cannot get the installed modem to connect. I've viewed the modem log; used Hyperterminal; checked my settings; read lots of stuff on this site. I don't have the same Dial Up Networking Properties menu as shown on the DUNS connection screen on this site so I can't "connect using U. S. Robotics 56K, etc.". My screen shows that it's using Q0S Packet Scheduling and just now TCP/IP - - there were NO OTHER CHOICES. I notice that my Dial Up Modem Connection under Networking shows Disconnected, but nothing I've done has reversed this. I feel certain this is the result of an installation issue, but don't know where to start to correct the problem. Computer shop did not give me any info on modem. USR site's driver is older than the one I have. I used Windows to install the Faxing Program. I've spent hours troubleshooting to no effect. Help! I really need to be able to fax.

(1) Unless you use modem for connection to Internet, the dial-up networking (DUNs) is irrelevant: these settings relate to making Internet connection with the modem.

(2) With Hyperterminal connected directly to modem's COM port, if you issue the command to dial a number
ATD######## (where #'s = valid number), and enter, and get a 'no dial tone' back, most likely that the modem itself is bad - the DAA no good -
www.modemsite.com/56k/lightning.asp
In some cases, if you connect a regular telephone line to the 'phone' jack of modem, and lift the telephone receiver off-hook, then try dial with the modem, the call will go through - this would be sure sign that the modem's DAA is bad, and the modem needs to be replaced.

Otherwise, double check: the modem line cord - use one that has only 2 wires connecdted through to each end; that the line cord is plugged into the 'line' jack on the modem; and, you could try uninstalling the modem and re-installing with the (older) driver from the USR site, but still, most likely that the modem is bad....

Aloha! Richard.

The problem doesn't seem to be that the modem isn't working. I can query it and print out a log of the query. But the modem doesn't send a dial signal (at least I don't find that command in the log). According to device manager the modem is working; but the connection is disabled.

I can't seem to establish a connection. The modem is using the Com3 port which should be okay. Windows XP appears to recognize the modem, but I can't get to a menu that describes what I want to do. All blasted Windows wants me to do is set up a dial up connection for the internet which I do NOT WANT or need.

If you use Hyperterminal connected directly to modem COM port as described at:
www.modemsite.com/56k/x2-hyperterm.asp
and issue the command to dial -
ATD####### - where #'s = number of another modem/ISP, etc.
and, if the modem does not get/recognize a dial tone,
and if the modem is properly connected to a working phone line, then the modem is bad even though it 'appears' to work in every other respect.
All modems interface to phone line (DAA), and if this interface isn't working, the modem won't work even though it responds to diagnostics and commands.

Aloha! Richard.

Thank you for your help. I ran hyperterminal a second time and it said there was no dial tone. I'll have to take the new computer back to the shop for a replacement modem card. The odd thing is that my old computer (on which I reinstalled Windows XP for my husband, along with his programs) has the same problem and I KNOW that its modem was working perfectly prior to the re-installation of Windows. That's why I was so sure it was an installation issue. Go figure.
