I need to connect two computers with a standard 56k Modem. That means that I directly connect the two modems.
How can I open a connection between the modems? How does the handshake work?

You do mean 2 computers (in different locations) each connected to their own phone line, right?

What software you use depends upon what you want to do once you are connected.

You can use, for instance, Hyperterminal on each computer. One computer will answer the line, the other dial out. Once you are connected, you will have equivalent of TTY connection and have some limited file transfer capabilities.

With Windows, you can also set up one computer to be a RAS (remote access server) server and the other a RAS client; or, use Remote Desktop (the server comes with WindowsXP Professional; the client available for all versions of Windows as well as for the Macintosh).

How does the handshake work? The computer that answers (via ATA command, or by setting autoanswer on with ATS0=1) starts the handshake, and the other computer that dialed out (with ATD###### command) responds.

Aloha! Richard.
