I have a USR 56K winmodem which seemed to work decently with my older computer running win98 but since I have installed on a system with Windows2000 pro it has been giving me alot of trouble, with both the original drivers, and even after I went to the USR site and updated them.

I get a message that says "3cmlnkw.exe has generated errors and will be shut down" and I have to reboot. I only seem to have this problem when I'm browsing; I can play games online for hours with no problem usually. I have recently reinstalled Windows2000 pro, and still experience the same problem so I don't think it is Windows. I could try another modem, but I would like to make sure there is no other solution first.

I'd try to make sure
a) Win2k has all the latest patches/security updates
b) the modem driver is the latest available
c) there is no unnecessary tasks running - to test, I would temporarily disable, terminate, or eliminate any unessential tasks such as firewall, AV, etc. & see if problem goes away; then add back 1 by 1 to isolate
d) try the modem in a different PCI slot
www.modemsite.com/56k/pci.asp

e) try computer in safe modem with networking
f) give up?

Aloha! Richard.
