I have what I believe is a Lucent modem. Has three Lucent chips on it. On a sticker that has the FCC ID thing on it, it also says Internal 56K Data/Fax/Voice Modem. On the circuit board itself it says Smart 1998 94V-0 PC80072 Rev B. Have little but a couple of guesses what all that means but would simply like to know if I can use this modem in a new system I'm thinking of building with a Linux Operating System. Have been told to stay away form 'winmodems' got that. Oh, if I can't use this modem and someone has a few extra minutes to take a peek at EGG, could you give me a recommendation as to what modem I need to get that will work with Linux?

What are the chip numbers on the Lucent chips?

The 'Lt Win Modem' aka 'Agere Win Modem' has some Linux support -
www.modemsite.com/56k/ltwin3.asp

No support for the Softmodem
www.modemsite.com/56k/sv92p.asp

However, in my opinion, the best choice for Linux is an external, hardware-controller based modem like an OLD (used) Sportster or Courier that connects to the PC via standard COM (serial) port.

Aloha! Richard.

Ok, chip numbers...

1646T00
REA 12

1027J11
9816S
15715741

1034AH-J

43115741

Thought about an external modem, suppose I could tape one to the top of the monitor or something. Let's see if I can stick one inside the can first though.

The 1646T is a Lucent Win Modem / aka Agere Win Modem, and there are some Linux drivers for that chipset - see

Smartlink developed Linux drivers, but went out of the modem business - the modem assets were purchased by Conexant which doesn't offer any support or drivers for Smartlink modems at this time.
See
www.modemsite.com/56k/smartlink.asp

But, you might find some 3rd-party support - try:

Aloha! Richard.
