mrgardon Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 7/29/2006 6:54:59 PM I have what I believe is a Lucent modem. Has three Lucent chips on it. On a sticker that has the FCC ID thing on it, it also says Internal 56K Data/Fax/Voice Modem. On the circuit board itself it says Smart 1998 94V-0 PC80072 Rev B. Have little but a couple of guesses what all that means but would simply like to know if I can use this modem in a new system I'm thinking of building with a Linux Operating System. Have been told to stay away form 'winmodems' got that. Oh, if I can't use this modem and someone has a few extra minutes to take a peek at EGG, could you give me a recommendation as to what modem I need to get that will work with Linux? |

The 'Lt Win Modem' aka 'Agere Win Modem' has some Linux support - No support for the Softmodem However, in my opinion, the best choice for Linux is an external, hardware-controller based modem like an OLD (used) Sportster or Courier that connects to the PC via standard COM (serial) port. Aloha! Richard. |
mrgardon Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 7/30/2006 11:37:23 AM Ok, chip numbers... 1646T00 1027J11 1034AH-J Thought about an external modem, suppose I could tape one to the top of the monitor or something. Let's see if I can stick one inside the can first though. |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 7/31/2006 9:41:27 AM The 1646T is a Lucent Win Modem / aka Agere Win Modem, and there are some Linux drivers for that chipset - see www.modemsite.com/56k/ltwin3.asp Aloha! Richard. |
mrgardon Tl Posts: 3 USA | Posted - 7/31/2006 12:32:44 PM Ok got another modem here with one chip and a mini tower looking thing that ain't connected to the board like a chip. Mini tower numbers: Sun Hold THD-0501L 5VDC. Chip numbers: SmartLink SL2800 BOAAA0537Z. Can you tell me if this is a modem that will work with Linux |
v.Richard Tl Posts: 6222 USA | Posted - 8/5/2006 11:17:11 AM Smartlink developed Linux drivers, but went out of the modem business - the modem assets were purchased by Conexant which doesn't offer any support or drivers for Smartlink modems at this time. See www.modemsite.com/56k/smartlink.asp But, you might find some 3rd-party support - try: Aloha! Richard. |
