I am trying to dial up an ISP that is located in another area code about 200 miles away. I can call their number on the regular telephone and I get into the modem on their site without problems. However 99.9% of the time when I dial through a modem I get a message that states "The phone company you are trying to call is experiencing difficulty please call back at a later time. I did connect a couple times for a short period of time last night but that is the only time I got through without getting that message. The telephone always gets through. Can anyone explain what is happening? Tried 3 modems on 3 computers. The number I was trying to reach is (715)654-6435 (Northern Wisconsin.)

1) Depending upon your connectoid/modem/dialing properties, the number you think you have set modem to dial may be different that the number that is actually being dialed!
Check your connectoid properties, and DIALING RULES

To see what number is actually being dialed, check the modem log - (you might need to add:
e1
as extra settings/initialization string in order for the log to display the number instead of just ##'s - see

2) Another possibility is that the tone duration/spacing is too fast for the phone company equipment to decipher.
Increase the tone duration or spacing -
Try
s11=120
(That's s-eleven equals one hundred twenty)
as initialization string (extra settings)
