I am using USR 5686 modems to collect data from dumb machines outputing ASCII data at 9600. I have had success using them straight from the box by setting DIP 1 to DTR override and DIP 5 to AutoAnswer. However the last two I've tried don't keep the AutoAnswer on. Do I have bad modems or do I need to set something with AT commands?

will set modem to answer on first ring.
ats0=# sets modem to answer on # rings; if #=0 autoanswer is turned off.

S0 was set OK.
Upon testing I found the problem to be with the device I connected to. If connected with all lines of the DB9 serial cable, the USR modem would not hold the AutoAnswer setting if the modem powered up after the device was connected. The device must be puting out a signal on one of the lines that confuses the modem. Everything works fine if I connected with only pins 2,3 and 5 (and my cable had 7-8 connected together at the modem)
