I just got an external USB 56k modem (from China) and it is called a 'Smartlink'.
I'm using it on the same line as the phone.
Reading up on it I see that I should have a fax that can distinguish between incoming phone calls and incoming fax calls if I want to do this successfully.
Is that true?
Can my machine do that?
If it can't what must I do to use it in receive mode?

You'd need software that supports both voice and fax modes and is compatible with the Smartlink modem.
Smartlink was purchased some time ago by Conexant, which stopped suport/development of drivers for the Smartlink line.

Thanks for that, Richard. It was really cheap. From China. I should have researched the driver question first. No matter. It works well enough. Perhaps it won't receive faxes successfully automatically when we're not here, but it can receive manually okay, we've tested that, and of course it sends alright.
I wanted to use the Call Corder software, too, for recording calls and it doesn't seem to be able to work with this modem, but that's no great setback either.
thanks for your input.
