I have an Acer model 5520 notebook that came with Vista operating system. I don’t particularly like Vista and it won’t run most of my other software like Word/Partition Magic etc. I have a copy of Winxp Media Center that’s not being used on anything else so I installed it on the Acer. Everything went ok and seemed to be working correctly until I installed AOL and it could not find the modem. I brought up Device Manager and sure enough there was not a modem listed. I thought the driver might be missing. I had noted what modem was installed when Vista was running. It was a HDAUDIO SOFT DATA FAX MODEM WITH SMART CP 184.108.40.206. I looked it up on the web and downloaded driver CONEXANT HD AUDIO SOFT DATA FAX MODEM DRIVER 7.60 and placed it in Windows/system32/Drivers. Rebooted but still no driver appears in the device manager or aol.
I can’t go back to Vista because no disk of the program was provided and although I made a backup when I initially fired it up the recovery program won’t work. Anyway I don’t want to use Vista anyway. What can I do to get the modem into the system? Did I put it in the wrong place? Does Winxp Media Center have anything to do with it?
Please don’t suggest contacting Acer. They are of no help with much of anything.
