charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 1/5/2004 12:38:45 PM What model modem do you have? http://www.usr.com/support/product-template.asp?prod=2805 http://www.usr.com/support/s-main-menu.asp |
jaynesworth Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 1/5/2004 1:05:12 PM They are old enough that the product code field is blank when you run the Modem Identification Wizard. The 3/19/98 code referenced in your first link works, but it doesn't upgrade to X2 or V.90 if the modem isn't already X2 or V.90 enabled. There is a modem upgrade wizard that wants to dial a BBS number that is now a general USR voice mail number or read a diskette purchased from USR with a DMF file. Current USR support can't do anything more than send me to the FTP site for the stuff I have already. |

charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 1/5/2004 4:08:10 PM I have seen somewere on the usr site if you use the drivers on the ftp site it will take it back to V34. Note: Updates in the FTP site above include 33.6 and V.90 code only. This FTP site does not include V.90 upgrades for 33.6 products. If you have previously upgraded your 33.6 to V.90, do not run the update from this site. Running the update will return your modem to 33.6 code. |

jaynesworth Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 1/6/2004 12:20:32 PM I did get an answer from USR Customer Support. Upgrading still costs $60, and the part number is CRRV90. Call the number in the email copied below and pick the parts/accessories line. It'll take about a half hour to enable the key so you can call in and upgrade one modem. 1/5/2004
Dear John, Thank you for choosing U.S.Robotics. This upgrade process only applies to: 1224-14 If your modem has been already flashed to X2 proceed to step one. To check for X2 type ATI7 in a terminal program and look at the OPTIONS line. If your modem has not been upgraded to X2 look at the CLOCK FREQ line to determine what clock frequency you have. For 20 MHz clock frequency the firmware that supports the V90 upgrade can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.usr.com/usr/dl05/usrsdl.exe For 25 MHz clock frequency the firmware that supports the V90 upgrade can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.usr.com/usr/dl05/usrsdl25.exe Download the proper firmware from the U.S. Robotics FTP server and run the flash upgrade program. Your modem will then be ready to be upgraded to V.90 After flash upgrading your modems with x2/v90 firmware, open any terminal program such as HYPERTERMINAL in Windows or QModemPro. You will need to purchase an upgrade key to update the modem. To obtain an UPGRADE KEY CODE from US Robotics for $60 by calling 888-326-6099 8am-4pm MST M-F. At that point, From your terminal program: Type AT then press the ENTER key. At this point, put in your Upgrade Key. REMEMBER: THE KEY CODE, IS CASE SENSITIVE. Follow the on-screen prompts.
Again, thank you for choosing U.S.Robotics. charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 1/6/2004 12:25:17 PM These modems are good modems but not worth the 60 to update.See if I can find another way. |
jaynesworth Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 1/7/2004 7:27:15 AM I agree, Charles. I too will look for another method. I've sent an email to the Russian fellow who wrote a Sportster upgrade utility. His website indicated that there was a free method to upgrade Couriers using some European utility called UCU (Universal Courier Updater?). I managed to find a copy to download, but all the websites I've found that discuss how to use it are in Russian, and Babelfish can't quite handle it. |
charles Tl Posts: 5879 USA | Posted - 1/7/2004 6:17:46 PM Not sure yet about this UCU program about updating the modem or just fix a bad flash. http://www.people.nnov.ru/belyanin/3COM%20U_S_Robotics%20Sportster%2033600%20&%2056K%20FAQ.htm How can I restore the modem in case of unsuccessful reprogramming of FLASH memory? The best way to restore the modem is to carry it to the warranty service. But you can use the utility UCU.EXE (ftp://ftp.usrsupport.ru |

jaynesworth Tl Posts: 8 USA | Posted - 1/8/2004 9:10:19 AM I've come up with a solution. On this site, http://pq.ozersk.ru/ftp/fechos/not_os/hardware/modems/usr/, there are two files, idsdl304.rar and id25_304.rar, for 20Mhz and 25Mhz Couriers respectively. I had to find a utility to unpack the RAR format archive. I downloaded an evaulation copy of WINRAR from http://www.rarlab.com. Unpacking that stuff gives you modified DOS SDL.EXE utilities that flashes the old Courier V.Everything's to x2, V.90, and the latest 03/19/98 firmware. I can connect at 48k V.90 to either USR Total Control or a Livingston Portmaster 3. An example of the before and after ATI7 is below. ati7 Product type US/Canada External Supervisor date 09/20/96 Supervisor rev 6.5.4 OK Product type Russia (ex. US/Canada) External Supervisor date 03/13/98 Supervisor rev 7.3.14 Serial Number 0009553009229349 OK |
