Sending the analogue signal through a solid state switch rather than a relay contact; isn't that going
to degrade the signal?

Seems to be only the 2000 models that make this screech sound like the modem is getting shocked! I use a 56k external at work and its a 1998 model with no provlems.
when I bought the newer 2000 56 external x2/v90 it made the same freeking noise. I HOPE USR READS THESE POSTS AND TELLS US WHAT TO DO.

Same here with the 3CP5610A. Worked great for about a week, then buzz/static instead of a dial tone. Even the Modem Manager says it's not right. I e-mailed USR as well, with a short description of the problem AND a link to this discussion. Sheri, if you're reading this, it =really= has nothing to do with my modem speaker being "on" or "off". But if you've gotten this far, at least I know you've read the forum! Kick this up to level 2 or 3 customer service.

Well, MIXX, I finally gave up and brought back the 5610A. I included a copy of this forum in the box. I went next door and bought a BestData 56SF FaxModem. It turned out to be an ISA (I was expecting a PCI) but fortunately I have a shared ISA slot (mebbe 2? on my ABIT BX6R2). The instructions were concise, the software and drivers were actually on the included CD, unlike the 5610, and it was installed in 10 min flat! Throughput faster than my Soft56HSF or 5610. 5590 cps on leslie's page and 50 kbps on the Bandwidth page. Say what you will about Conexant, but I've been online for over 30 mins and lately 10 min was about average with both the Soft56HSF and the 5610A

THANK GOD!!! Someone else is having this problem too. If I hear "bad line" or "line noise" one more time as an explaination, I'll scream. It's the darn modem. My old USR that came with a Gateway works great, my new USR 56K Performance Pro modem SUCKS. It worked for about 3 weeks and now emits that same weird gargled noise that everyone else mentioned.

I have read a LOT of praise for USR's basic 56K PCI Voice/Fax Modem (which also happens to be their cheapest one) as being EXTREMELY reliable. So, me thinks I'll be sending the old one as Postage Due to the USR CEO and buying the cheaper one.

I have a 5686-03 I bought last year, same problem.
It died in August & was sent back for repair.
It still has the intermittent static problem.
It usually connects at 49.3k or 52k, and works great. But about once every week or two it is useless for an hour or so. I have a cheap PCI modem with the crappy Motorola chipset (phone line loops through the 5686) that always works (at 49.3k).

Hi All; well I bought a new 3 Com USR 005686-03 external after using an old 33.6 usr that had been upgraded to v90. Tonight the new 5686-03 died. Does the same thing that all of you are complaining about. It will be a few days before I can call tech support. Right now I am back to my old usr and it is working great. Makes me wished I hadn't spent the money for this new modem.

HA! USR Tech support total sux. I will tell my little story. I have a USR Courier, internal, V.Everything. It connects great at 53,333 or 52,000 every time. Now, one day, It just maxes out at 14,400. So i try to trouble shoot it. I turn the speaker volume on, and listen to the negotiating phase.

I hear it try to connect at 56K with the two zings, then the line just goes flat tone, and then about 5 secs later, just negotiates 14,400 connection.

So, I try to do everything, uninstall, reinstall, etc... then I plugged in my USR External Voice Sporster 56K. Works like a champ. 53,333. Nothing wrong with my phone line. Tried the modem in another computer, another phone line, etc... 14,400.

Then I emailed USR for their "superb courier support". I get back a response that maybe I'm living out in the boonies somewhere where 56K phone lines are not supported, and the highest possible might be 28.8K.

Totally clueless. This was after I explained the whole thing with the negotiating sounds, and prior connects, and test experiments and results.

I asked them to re-read the email, and tell me how i can go about getting it replaced. They said that my SPORTSTER modem was too old and probably no longer supported.

HAHAH! So, I did what I should have done in the first place, and called the tech-support. But, i didn't think it was such a high priority problem, so i just went through email... so much for that.

If they don't need brains to be email tech support, i wish they would hire my pet dog. At least that way, he could earn minimum wage or $6/hr, and pay for his own dog food or something. and, he'd probably provide the same level of email tech support as currently provided.

I'm thinking about putting my 5610A on a wall plaque so that whenever my current Modem gets on my nerves, I can look over at the 5610A and laugh, knowing that it's much crappier.

Maybe I'll get a gold plate for it that reads: "Designed by austistic monkey professionals at US Robotics Corporation...2001."

I HAD a 3cp5610a that worked well for a couple months.
The problem I had was , after booting the computer and logging on to the internet, my connect speed was 48000-50000. Log off and log on again, my connect speed was 28800 at best if it logged on at all. Reboot the computer adn log on at 48000-50000 again. After reading the Forun56 I see that others are having with this same modem. My problem was solved by installing a ZOOM 2925 , with the 5.75 update ,my connections are 50000-53333 all the time. Like others I spent $100.00 for what I thought was a good modem. It should be named 3CP5610A Performance POOR . Thanks to the forum my problem was solved!!!

I also have a USR5610A with the same problem. Weird squeek/squeel noise BEFORE it ever dials. Sometimes the noise starts as a low squeel and then raises in pitch to a high squeel then ZAP it stops and by that time my ISP's sever starts to answer, but still wont connect. And it usually(99% of the time) only happens at night! Weird, but it must have something to do with the power usage or phone usage in the evening being higher in rural areas than in the day time. I am willing to try anything BESIDES replacing my modem.I hate to have something beat me like this. My isp is very stable and i just ran a new phone line myself from my Telco. box out side straight to my computer so I know its not My phone line but possably the line from my Telco. Any thought, ideas, shots in the dark anything would be awesome. I am willing to be the guinnie pig. email if you would like amrcombs@kpunet.net

lol...Performance Poor. heh heh, I kinda like that one. :)

I just wanted to mention that my 5610A screws up ONLY at night. I'm going to hang onto mine until the V.92 firmware update to see if they add a "vampire dialing fix"

Even though the 5610A is listed as a model that will have a V.92 upgrade, the info USR gave me was that it will not....

I would be curious if anyone has tried or has their computer on a UPS still experiences this problem? I'm guessing it is the voltage on the phone line and not in the house. Some surge protectors and UPSs have phone line protection. That doesn't clean up the signal though.

I too have experienced the dreaded USR56k squeal
when it goes off hook. I've had it happen with
2 separate 56k externals. I have had some success
with getting it to work though.
I found that if I shut off my ceiling fan & light
it would connect every single time.
So I hooked an RFI filter (made by corcom, we have
that crap at work) in line and I am now able to
connect with the ceiling fan & light on. I did also
limit some of the other devices running on the same
outlet to reduce ground loop problems.
So, anyway that got me going.
USR wouldn't even respond to my email...
