I also have a UPS. It's an APC SmartUPS 700......I have had it for a year now and I had the aforementioned problems with the USR 5610A KNOWING that I had a great UPS and clean current so I eliminated EMI as a culprit right away. As for the Potato Gun launch.......send me an email Fred so I don't miss it.....hahahahaha.

I would like to share good news with you. After so many months of having nothing but trouble with my 56K External V90 USRob modem, I finally changed the switches. I have been connected now off and on for about 5 hours and very few disconnections. The switches I changed to are: 1-down, 3-down, 5-down, 8-down. I was using the switches that originally came with the modem. I hope this info helps someone.

UPDATE!!!

Unknown by me.....a friend who was having trouble with his cheapo integrated PCTel 56k modem went to HellMart (walmart....lol) and bought the 5610A. He called me around a week later asking me for advice on how to get it to work better because he kept getting stalls when surfing web pages and would require constant refreshes. I told him it was a P.O.S. but I thought I should at least go to his house and troubleshoot. I took my Zoom 2920 with me. First, I checked his phone box, line, connections, etc. and all was well. I then checked his drivers, settings, etc. no problems there. It showed almost exactly the same behavior as my old 5610A. I then physically removed the modem and installed the Zoom. Just like I thought, no problems whatsoever. Connected at 50666, played online smoothly and surfed like a champ. I don't know how many more people are going to get duped by this modem, but noone else in my town will as the local WalMart pulled them from the shelves and won't stock anymore as the floor mgr. told me they have had too many of them returned. Praise the day when this scourge of silicon is sold no more!!!

The best 56k modem is the supra express. Solid, always connects, and NO SCHREEEEEECH noise. I use this on my other amdk6 system and no problems. Always connect at 49666.
My other p933 system I use ADSL from Bellsouth<>man what a difference. online gaming is so enjoyable. I get low ings like 45-50 . Anyway I hope USR is happy with their quick money they made from 5610a Pretender Poo.
I'm glad I was able to return mine>>>>>>>>
Tanks for all the responses guy!

When it rains or thunders my modem will not work.
since I used this string my problem so far is solved. Two days of wet weather and still working, maybe just maybe by turning off the modems ablity to compress data helped.

I've tried the USR Performance Pro (PCI) too, and had the following problems.....

The first one I bought, worked for about a week, and then started making a "siren" type noise, when trying to connect. It wasn't the normal connect sound. It made a sound, like a police siren, from low pitch to high pitch, over and over again. And there was also some static. Anyway, it wouldn't connect anymore, so I took it back and exchanged it for another.

The second one worked for about two days, and then started making the same "siren" noise and wouldn't connect.

One last time, I tried another, and couldn't get it to work at all.

I first thought maybe my motherboard was damaging the modems in some way. Maybe too much voltage. But I tried a Zoom 56k V.92 PCI, and it works. The only thing I have problems with, is with my modems going to "sleep" and idleing. I'll click on a link to go to a webpage and NOTHING is transmitted/received for about 30sec-1min. This is B.S.!!!! The modem just sits there and then finally WAKES UP. This goes on and on, as long as I'm online.

What could be causing my modem to fall alseep and idle? This is very annoying, and I've already tried 5 different modems from 3 different manufacturers, plus the 3 USR Performance Pro modems.

I had trouble with my modem (a Sportster 0641 flashed to V90) "falling asleep" too. I would have to refresh the page just to wake it up so that I could go to a new link. I tried everything including changing isps. When Opera came out with the new "free" browser, I thought I would try it just for grins. (I was using IE 5.5) Viola! no more "sleeping modem syndrome". I've not had it doze off once in the past four months. I thought I would take a look at IE 6.0. It doesn't seem to be quite as bad as 5.5, but it still stalled. I don't know the reason Opera works, and IE doesn't, but it sure did.

Boy's to check the static on the line you cannot simply pick up the phone and listen for a noise. You will need to issue an i11 for just a normal line test this will tell you wich modulation your modem used to connect. Snr (SOUND NOISE RATIO)if you look to the right of snr you will see (db ) if this is under 45 it is not supported by USR. (db ) refers to how much static is on the line.If you want a more sophisticated
answer try y11 bolth very helpful. Lets not forget the phone company only supports 9600 bps and only allow 53.3.so if your snr is under 45 call the phone company.
There should not be that much static on anybody's line.

Go to Radio shack and buy the 11 dollar phone line Radio Interference filter. Solved my problem after six months of not getting connected in the evenings!

My USR 56K ID 568603 worked fine for months until I changed my PC. It then started to emit that awfull noise when going off hook. What is interesting is that it will work if I go back to my old PC. My theory is that this modem is sensible to noise coming from the PC itself and faster CPU means probably more noise. I have used a slower 33.6K with my new PC without problem.

Here's my story -

I'm on my 3rd USR v.92 external (model 5686). All three have had various problems similar to those above. After about a week the first 2 would stop dialing out and I'd turn up the speaker volume. They'd squeal sometimes, but more often it was a fuzzy sounding DTMF instead of the clean ones, or it wouldn't recognize the dialtone.

The first 2 were from the same store, so I tried one from another store. It started doing it after about 3 hours!

IMHO USR is no longer the quality modem manufacturer they once were. Its interesting that some people note power problems, but I shouldn't have to troubleshoot their products for them!

It will get returned today as soon as the stores open and I'm off to search for a better enternal Faxmodem.

I bought this modem three weeks ago and had the same line static problem you described. I finally figured out the desktop was on the same household AC circuit as the kitchen overhead lights on a dimmer switch. Whenever the dimmer was used, it introduced horrible static which this modem could not handle. As soon as I turned the dimmer off the noise stopped and the modem worked just fine. (That's why it only happened at night!) So carefully check all other things plugged into the same circuit as the desktop. I also found this modem needs a dedicated phone line and could not handle other devices on the same line. Now it works just fine but it was making me crazy for weeks before I figured it all out. Hope this helps you!

I solved my problem by throwing the modem into the drawer and forgetting about it.

I bought a used external USR Courier for $20.00 and flashed it to V.90 and now happily surf with a real USR Product.

I still don't know what that 5610A is? It's like some evil experiment that went wrong.
