I will try more things, but just to let you know; I wiped the hard drive and reformatted it, then installed Windows 95 just to see if the modem would work with it instead of Windows 98. I was able to query the modem and also was able to hear it dial out, but could never make a connection with my ISP.

I do have Windows 98 loaded again after another hard drive wipe & reformatting & will now try a whole bunch of different settings. Thanks.

Is this 98se? If you have a cd burner on other pc You might what to install this download,it has allot of the 98se hot fixes. Have you check the settings in the bios also? What error was you getting on 95.If you get the modem to dial out in 98 try the connection using Hyperterminal.

If still having problems on install.
Click on the START button, click on SETTINGS and then click CONTROL PANEL.
Double click on the SYSTEM icon.
Click on the DEVICE MANAGER tab.
Double click PORTS (Com & LPT). Any com ports not being used should be disabled.
Double click the port and place a tick in the box where the device should be disabled.
Restart Windows reinstall the modem.Also you could check the driver file (read me file) It give some setup for MEMORY COM PORT IRQ

Okay, I have the modem installed on Com 3; I can Query the modem & all the info shows up. I can do a dialing test and I can hear the modem dialing, but I cannot connect to my ISP. In Hyperterminal if I type AT13, I get "error"..... if I type AT&F1 I get "ok".

I show no conflicts in the Device Manager anywhere at all.

In Hyperterminal if I type AT13, I get "error".....
This would be ati3 not at13. What error are you getting from the failed connection.

Try this in hypertermianl.
Type AT click enter
Type AT&F0 click enter 0 is zero
Type ATDTXXX-XXXX ISP number click enter.
Wait to see if it will connect and you should get a login promp,

Check all dial up settings.
Make sure there is no check in use area code if it is not needed.
http://help.stargate.net/dialup/win9x-check.shtml

double click my computer
double click dial up networking
right click your connection icon and go to properties
make sure you modem is listed in the connect using window
make sure that there is no check in use area code if not needed,check the isp number
click configure
click connection
click advance
click view log.
post this log.

You are using Windows 98 not windows 98se. This is what you should see from the test from above.Note the XXX-XXXX is my isp number.I had to remove and use X for this post.Might check with isp if you are using a V92 number,this mode will not support it.

AT
OK
AT&F0
OK
ATDTXXX-XXXX
CONNECT 52000

*** Term1 ***login:

If the above will not work try this in hyperterminal

AT click enter
AT&F0 click enter
+MS=V34 click enter
ATDTXXX-XXXX click enter

tried all the Hyperterminal commands, this is what I get:

AT says OK
AT&F0 says OK
ATDTxxx-xxxx (where x's is my ISP number) says NO DIAL TONE

Tried the last set of commands, the last part with +MS=V34 and clicking enter only takes me back to the beginning of +MS=V34

When I use DIAGNOSE (came with my drivers for the modem) it says NO CARRIER CALL WAS NOT ANSWERED, OR A MODEM CONNECTION COULD NOT BE ESTABLISHED

I don't suppose the Windows 98SE hot fix would work for Windows 98, would it?

No that update is for 98se only.Might add some commas in front of the number like this ,,,,,XXX-XXXX Do you have voice mail on this line?
When using hyperterminal try this for the dialing
Type AT click enter
Type AT&F click enter (just use AT&F)
Type ATX3DTXXX-XXXX ISP number click enter.Note the X3 for blind dialing.

Also disable wait for dial tone.

Make sure the phone line is in the correct slot in the modem.

Hey, I think I'm making progress! I finally got the modem to dial my ISP number by adding comma's in front of the ISP's phone #. However, I did get a message shortly after saying, "You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed...". I wonder why that is????

My modem is a x2 data/fax modem. Should I be putting AT&F X2; X2AT&F or X2 AT&F in the Extra initialiaztion strings? Or leaving the Extra initialzation strings empty?

This modem should be X2 and V90.Please post a modem log. I would try to disable X2 and V90 to make a V34 connection.There is a at command file in the driver file.

Try this in extra settings.
Try this first.
S32=128S10=200

If the above will not help try this.
S32=64S10=200S25=100

AT&F
&Fn
n=0 Load Factory Configuration
n=1 Hardware Flow Control Cnfg.
n=2 Software Flow Control Cnfg.

Do not put AT&F in the modem string,this will set it to factory defaults.

Modem command file.

Look in the Winmodem.inf file to see what the drivers version is.
The one on the USR site is
DriverVer=02/16/1999, 2.10.19.0000

You can get modem info from hyperterminal by using the ati command.Just use ati0 ati1 ati2 ,,,,,ect.
